Xc70 axle shaft spline stuck in transmission

Post by Nyblonde »

Tried replacing the drivers side cv joint/axle. Couldn't get it out after several hours of trying. Unfortunately the axle shaft spline broke in the transmission. Have tried to tap it out, to no avail. Any thoughts/experiences with getting this out? Has anyone gone through the tranny from the other side and gotten it out? Very desperate... Looking like might have to take this to a tranny place and have them get this out, or replace the tranny... Please help.

You won't be able to go through the other side because there will be differential things in the way.

You say it's "broken" you mean you've pulled the joint apart and the stub shaft is in the side gear, or you've actually broken the stub shaft flush with the side gear?

If you still have the complete stub shaft on there get two prybars, cross them in an x to get at both sides of the flange and then lever it out. I usualy use a piece of plywood to protect the transmission case if I have to pry on it.

if you've actually broken the stub and it's flush in the trans, drill the center, tap it for a 1/2" bolt and use a slide hammer attached to the bolt to pull it.

take a block of wood and a hammer and drive it in then pry it out with two large screw drivers. Driving it in unseats the clip that's on the spline. Doubt you broke anything you just pulled the cv joint apart
