2003 XC70 high pitch tone in rain, possibly ABS?

Post by GBS »

Hey all,

so last weekend we had a lot of rain and while going 65 I hit a patch of standing water. the car sort of slid but recovered, no big deal really but what followed was interesting. For the next 30 seconds there was a high pitch tone, sound from the rear axle, similar to running a finger around a glass. It would go away when I hit accelerator and back when coasting, then after a few more of that it disappeared all together. My wife said she had the same thing happen when approaching an intersection at lower speed... Again it was raining. Anyone heard this before or have any idea what it could be? the pitch seems to be same even though I slowed car to 50 but maybe lower speed would.

I'm hoping its not my haldex or rear diff or something going... Also I was suspecting a bearing for the rear axle but on my xc90 it was easy to see, the xc70 not so much.

Thanks!

Root cause...driveshaft hitting muffler mount after a dousing of the underside with water.

There is a TSB for fix by Volvo or you can move the mount a bit with suitable tools

Awesome, thank you both! I tried Google but didn't make the connection and squeal certainly describes it. Much obliged!

Jim gets the kudos for this, I just followed his link and added post to make the thread archival.

You have to buy your next car from him, btw.

I'll keep the purchase in mind, if he has a dark interior, low miles P2 wagon without turbo and sunroof I'm in :o)

I called a exhaust place and they'll take out resonator and replace with a straight pipe for $50, seems like the best way to go.

quick update: an exhaust shop did this in 30 minutes and it cost $55. they said there were definitely marks on the shaft from the resonator and that replacing it with straight pipe was a good idea. I don't know if the water squeal has been fixed but I have noticed that a small vibration sound while accelerating is gone. if I had another 4wd P2 I'd just do this to that too even if I didn't have the squeal symptom, prob the best $55 I've spent on a professional fix.

Im sure you mean 60 bucks, after you add the 5 buck tithe to MVS (thinly veiled pitch to support the site on the next fund drive)

Donations always cheerfully accepted, never expected.

To be completely honest $55 was without tax but I didn't want to scare people.... I definitely plan to donate during fund drive as I done before, I don't think I've received the coveted donor badge but I'm hoping next time I'll make it, if there is such a badge still.
