2004 S80 advice on exhaust upgrades

Post by volvobro »

I currently have an exhaust leak. The pipe right after my cat has completely rusted and will need replacing/patching. However, after surveying the exhaust system, it's looking pretty rusty, and I've decided that I might as well take this opportunity to replace and upgrade some exhaust components.

Here's a picture for reference:

I'm thinking a 3" downpipe, followed by the stock cat [5] and then a straight pipe to the back muffler [15]. The middle resonator/muffler [10] is quite rusty, so I was thinking of taking it out.

I'm hoping to get a nice sound, but I truly have no idea what it's going to sound like - kinda just hoping for the best.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

I had both of the rearmost mufflers on my 2.9 removed & replaced with a single Flowmaster.
It now has a distinctive six cylinder report that can be entertaining or annoying. It just depends upon your mood.
A five cylinder turbocharged report will be much different than a normally aspirated engine.
Some folks report an unpleasant chirping whistle when on the boost of four cylinder cars after an exhaust change.
Good luck with your choice.

This guy removed the rear muffler, sounds nice but as above after a while it might get annoying. Only with the rear muffler it might sound nice though. Also check the flexible ahead of the cat, is known to break.

Thanks for the input guys.
Someone from another forum mentioned that a 3" downpipe might be overkill and could even be detrimental to performance... is that true?
I'm currently looking at purchasing this cat as the old one is getting pretty old and rusty.
Still looking for a good middle resonator. And still planning on keeping the stock rear muffler.
