Time for me to replace the alternator (I spilled some coolant on it and now the bearings are toasted).
Car is automatic 2003 2.4 n/a (VIN32272264), how to find out which alternator it has? I see online 120A, 140A, with and without freewheel pulley, any trick to find which is the right one?

You have the 140A alternator with the clutch pulley. I work at a starter/alternator rebuilder, but we can't ship to Canada. Try a local auto parts shop. Here are some part numbers that will work. I know the WAI unit is available on amazon for $147 US https://www.amazon.com/Discount-Starter- ... B0051BOSLU
0124525029 - OEM number (VERY expensive)
AL0820N - Bosch NEW aftermarket number (expensive)
AL0820X - Bosch remanufactured unit. (somewhat reasonable)
13998N - WAI aftermarket unit (MUCH cheaper, fairly decent)

Thanks, do you think I can fit a later 05-09 140A ? Is it different than the early 140A?

Ok, found the answer, 2005+ have a different regulator so it won't work on 2003-2004 unless the regulator can be swapped (don't know if doable).

I have to test the alternator in my son's car this week coming up, and was
wondering of the WAI is available for a 96 850, and where can they be purchased?
Don't see WAI at Rock Auto or FCP, Rock Auto has remanufactured from:
Pure Power
AC Delco
REMY
Bosch
Not sure if any of these remans are any good.
Are there any upgrades from later model cars that drop in?

WAI may possibly be listed under WPS depending on the distributor. Here is the one you need for your 850.

I replaced my alternator a while back and got a rebuilt from Auto Zone, they looked it up in their system and what I got was supposed to work for my V70 2002... it didn't, or at least the display said there was a problem with the charger. Voltage was OK but I didn't feel comfortable with it and digging some more I just needed new regulator. I would not get it alternator from an auto zone type store again....

Thanks everyone,
@RavagedPheonix thanks for the WPS=WAI info, will probably go with that one
or a reman if needed.
I'm able to look up the correct fit my question is which brand or reman in the
$100 to "$150 range is decent and will last at least 5 years or so.
I'll probably go with the WPS if we need it, car should be here today and will
have it tested tomorrow.
