Help troubleshoot ETM

Post by Reming870 »

2000 S70. Codes are
P1600 DTC Definition not found
P1670 DTC Definition not found
P0221 throttle pedal position sensor/switch b circuit range performance
P1610 DTC Definition not found
ETS light on dash is lit
Engine is misfiring and "limp mode"

What's the next step? Is this definetly the ETM?

Sounds more like ETM but you probably have many this wrong.

How old is ETM module?

The ETM looks original. 180k miles now. Just acquired car but has been very well maintained.

Whew, now I've got to up chuck the extra Adderal dose I just ate.

Can you clear all the codes and see what comes back?

You can take it to a parts store and have them clear the codes, if you can make it out there.

Maintenance doesn't really help you avoid ETM trouble. If you use the gas pedal at all, your ETM will wear out. Cleaning it gets you a little extra time, but 180k is a ways out. I had a white-label ETM go out on my car at ~257k, but I just assume it'd been changed relatively early in the car's life.

I don't mind replacing the ETM, BUT I need to make sure that is the problem.

Do these codes and symptoms confirm this is the issue?

No, life isnt that easy. Moreover, its likely you have more than one problem with your car.

With the ETS light on, though, I would put odds of 99% that the ETB has reached end of life. We have very, very few reports of ETS light going on falsely.

Some checks:

Do you HEAR the ETM turning on and self-testing for approx. 8 seconds with key in PosII?

If you can't hear it remove the connector to the ETM and check the thick green/white wire for 12V+ & the thick brown wire for ground continuity.

If your car's loom is providing power you can move on and get another one.

I doubt those codes are going to be accurate. Definition not set is not Volvo nomenclature for an error.
