Ignition Key, switchblade broken '04 v70

Post by Faust »

'04 v70 For about a year it has taken a little extra push to engage the pawl which holds the key closed. Now, the "switchblade" spring is broken and I have to hold the release button and shake it to open it. Any easy fix, or concerns with disassembly?

No fix as far as I know, you need a new front (key portion) section
Then you need to go thru the usual, have it cut then programmed to your car (with one new software)

I wonder if it is possible to get a used key fob and switch the blade? The chip and board can be swapped, not sure about the blade itself. There are also new key fobs available from China but I've read these are of poor quality.

Small loop of tape around the base so that you can pull out the key if it get stuck?

I confess I don't sweat small stuff like this too much

Sensible, however the key stabs a hole in your pocket if left open.

buy new plastic shell. Swap guts and your cut key to it.

I finally received mine in the post from China. Took 9 weeks to get here, but look of reasonable quality and cost about $9.00 for the key blank, and the spring, press button, cover and transponder.

It is very difficult to open the unit successfully to repair. It is often not the spring that breaks but the legs on the button itself. Search online and on MVS as there are repair procedures out there using a very thin bladed saw to open the original casing and then gluing it closed.

Be careful if you are thinking of transferring the transponder chip as it will likely break as it is glued in place.

Once you separate the keyhead from the remote section you pry open the head to retrieve the glass chip.

The replacement is cheap if aftermarket and if you search online there are just keyheads without the remote casing. The keyheads must be superglued back together once the chip is in to avoid the unit exploding apart.

Avoid using the aftermarket remote casing if you can; the buttons get worn off quickly and you can't read which is unlock/lock.
