Rattling from top of the engine

Post by Kid2 »

Hi All,
New chap here. Been lurking around for a while and decided to join.
Probably just as well as today my ok girl has developed a fault. Namely the title id the thread.

Now there's 220000k on the clock. TB, water pump and tensioner done at 171k.

This morning though the rattle raised it's head.
From doing a bit of fishing it seams that the problem maybe the VVT pulley. Not sure...
When I disconnect the exhaust cam solenoid then it quietens.
Can anyony point me in the right direction or have prior dealing of the same issue.
FWIW I'm a panel beater so I've decent knowledge of cars in general and have been driving Volvo's for the last 12 years. But this problem is new to me.

Anyway thanks for taking the time to read my first post.
Mike.

I've got a growl in my exhaust cam CVVT but if it rattled, I would replac it pretty quickly. I still take mine on 200 Mile round trips but I pay close attention to it

Ya mine sounds like it's the exhaust cam as well. When I disconnect the solenoid it disappears and is also non existent until it's warm.

This rattle ?

It's common on the S40, not much common on the S60. Rather expensive at the dealer, and aftermarket parts I won't trust. Plenty of these used off Ebay, I'd look for a nice clean one as they commonly get oil varnish that prevents proper opening. Wise to X2 check when ordering, so as not to confuse with an intake one.

If the timing belt kit wasn't original Volvo parts, I'd take the time to give it a check by the same occasion as some aftermarket parts have failed rather quickly.

Thanks.
Timing kit was all volvo main dealer.
I've only had this V70 for 18 months and I've only put about 8k on it in that time. I don't do huge milage.
I've been into my own Mechanic yesterday so he reckons there's no need of a belt change.
So hopefully it may not be too big of a bill.
