Could someone please let me know how to remove the air vent as I do not want to break anything. Since it is plastic, always worry if I apply to much force.

It pops out but it doesn't necessarily do it willingly. As I recall you release the side toward the inside of the car first and then it slides towards you to release the tabs that are toward the firewall.
