Hello
So without making this too long a story....I have a year 2000 v70 xc se. Love it. Only trouble is I had an issue with the viscous coupling and the bevel gear.
I want to know where to start.... basically I apparently need to "match" the gearing in the bevel gear with the rear diff / viscous coupling. I am currently running in fwd only, and have the prop shaft in the garage. Is there a place I can look to see serial numbers and find out if there is a cheat sheet to see if what is on the car is correct.
Supposedly the viscous coupling is a correct year 2000 and so is the bevel gear / angle gear. I would like to return the car to awd as I am about to move to Kelowna BC where it will come in handy for ski season etc...
Any help appreciated
John

Welcome John.
Do you know the history of the car, and have any reason to believe any of the major parts have been replaced? Many of the AWD components are interchangeable with the main differences being the flanges on the output of the angle gear (bevel gear) to the prop and at the other end at the VC unit vary in diameter from 98 to 00 years, and I think there were 2 0r 3 options. But again you can change the flanges worst case to the correct ones. Measure the outer diameter of the flanges and see if they match those of the prop-shaft and VC at the appropriate ends. If they do you are probably good to go.
The chance that someone changed the rear diff is very low. Reason being you have to remove the whole rear sub-frame and fuel tank to separate the sub-frame to get the diff out. This is a 8-10 hour job assuming the sub-frame to frame bolts come out!
Below are a couple of pictures of the ID on the rear diff housing of my 2000 V70R AWD which uses the same diff as in your car, as well as VC unit.
Apologies that the diff is upside down to the markings are near the front LH side front of the diff by the filler bolt.
The Angle/bevel gear are if I recall correctly also the same except for the collar between the transmission and bevel gear is different.
If you have any issues feel free to PM me. I have a spare rear diff, rear axles and VC unit, but no prop-shaft or bevel gear if you are stuck. They all came from a 2000 V70 XC.
Neil.
