S70 and XC90 oil coolers, maybe upgrade?

Post by RigsPGT »

Hi all,
I came across a couple of pictures on the web for S70 and XC90 oil coolers and XC90 one seems thicker than the other. Now I haven't done any research on part numbers or anything yet but from the pictures they look alike, except the size difference. I'm hitting the junkyards tomorrow and I'll be pulling both coolers from both cars to compare and if they are identical as far as fitment, I'd say that would be a good upgrade (will measure fluid as well) for a bit more cooling.
Not that it is a huge difference but if they fit, why not? Reminds me the Ford Probe years where owners would come up with bigger oil filters using Corvette ones and that was double the size of the OEM one.
Anyway, has anyone messed with them in the past?

I have not but if the XC90 cooler fits go for it. Its always nice to help the engine stay a little cooler.

Can't wait to go to the JY tomorrow as last time I was eyeing on an XC90 mostly for the transmission cooler and turbo but I will explore the options :)

Off topic but if you are picking a 5 cylinder XC90, it likely has the R exhaust manifold which is a great upgrade for your turbo car, flows better than either of the P80 ones and the fins don't crack.

If it looks like the one on the left, grab it:

I'm not sure about the heat shield with an R manifold, I would grab the one on the XC90 if it is there. Virtually every turbo S60 has this manifold, too (not just S60R models).

:) Thanks but I have the R manifold which I've also ported it and polished it but yeah my eyes were on the turbo area last time I was there. The only problem today was that the XC90 wasn't there anymore so no oil cooler comparison :(. I did however found some pictures from diesel XC90s in Europe that looked almost double the size of our stock one and having similar flange. Bad thing is that I don't want to shell around $230 to buy one. For that money I'd rather pay a shop fabricate me a plate with 2 ports so I can rig up an external cooler but my S70 would then look like an hydraulic machine ;)
