1996 850R - need input

My son and I bought a 1996 850R with 185K on it. My son started it today and as he was backing out of the garage he reved it to 3000 RPM and he said he heard a pop followed by pressure being relieved from something and then the engine died. He looked under the hood and under the car but could not find anything out of the ordinary. He restarted the car and now it seems to have an uneven idle. Anyone have any ideas what may have happened?

My first thought would be a boost hose.

Agreed!

Check all of the fat rubber (and undoubtedly very slimy by now) hoses in the path from the turbo to the intercooler to the throttle body. Especially that funny-shaped one at the throttle body.

Also remember that just because a hose looks OK, that doesn't mean it is. Rubber hoses suffer under years of exposure to both temperature, weather and chemicals under there, so I highly recommend swapping them for a set of Samco or do88 silicone hoses. It's been my first priority with all of my Volvos. :)

The turbo hose on top of the turbo close to the firewall likes to give you the nice warning pop. Make sure your son knows how to treat a turbo or he will wear it out quick.

Definitely a boost hose. If I were you, I'd take a look at any and all vacuum hoses, check for cracks or decaying hoses. Can't tell you how many issues I've resolved with my V70 simply by replacing all vacuum hoses in sight.
