Light clunking from 98 V70 console when turning?

Post by 1337 »

When I go around a tight corner, I hear a sound that I can best describe as "a plastic Solo cup tipping over."

The sound seems to be coming from the center console. It sounds like a plastic object tips one way when I turn right, and the other way when I turn left. This has been going on since I bought my V70 earlier this year.

I don't have anything in the storage area of the console. I haven't found any obvious cause of the sound. I also haven't pulled the console out to look underneath.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Check that the lid isn't loose. Tighten hinge screws.
There's lots of things that can come loose under there - wires, connectors, light bulbs and OBDII-backets. Getting the console off can be a bit of a pain, but it's not very hard.

It could also be the muffler heat shield under the car. The mountings rot through and allow the shield to move around. Stock up with some large thin washers and remove the mounting plastic nuts and put the washers under them and re-fit.
