Weird Electrical Issue

Post by jdvoigt »

My son had issues with our 2004.5 S40 today. Started it up fine, rolled down the windows drove off, all was normal. After about 5 minutes he tried to roll up the windows, but they wouldn't go up. He got to his destination, put it in park and tried to roll up the windows again, still won't go up. Turned the car off, engine stops, but A/C fan is still blowing, radio is on, but cannot get it to stop, turn blower fan higher or lower, and windows will not operate. I had him pull the battery cable off, which stopped the blower fan, but as soon as he re-connected the battery, fan starts blowing again. Pulled the battery cable off again, let it sit for about 10 minutes and was able to re-start the car. Drove it back to his apartment, but had inoperable instrument cluster, turn signals did not work, but eventually was able to roll up the windows. Shut off the car once home and all is shut down now.

Anyone have an idea of what could be the cause? Seems to me like the ignition switch thought it was stuck in the 'accessory' position, even though the key was out. I assume it's some sort of electrical issue?

Looks like something makes CAN bus to go down.
Try to refresh contacts at the CEM sockets first.
Pull off every socket and put it back.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

Did he pull the key out of the ignition? These cars keep the radio and other stuff on if the key has been turned at all and not removed. In regards to the windows, you might want to search this forum- seems like I've come across some similar posts while migrating posts over from the older S40 threads.
