99 volvo c70 2.3 liter is starting then immediately dies

Post by Spenser »

Car starts then immediately dies, and after it dies it won't turn on for about ten minutes, then it does the same thing over and over
fuel is making it to the injectors
I got it to stay on twice but after that it lost the ability to stay on
fuel pressure is fine
no check engine lights
No codes on obd2 scanner
Car worked fine right before doing this, it showed 0 signs of malfunction
It has 77,000 miles on the working odometer
car stays on with starting fluid
Fuel pump seems to be working and the filter is not clogged
This is very frustrating, no mechanics I have spoken to can pinpoint the issue, claiming they are "not familiar with volvo cars" but to my understanding an engine is an engine and there is very little difference it's not like the car speaks Japanese and every other car on the planet speaks English (if volvos could speak)

I'd swap a good fuel relay in. Ez to do. That age the solders get brittle. Worth a shot.

I know it might sound patronizing, but twice in my life I've seen inaccurate or stuck fuel gauges allow someone to run out of fuel and still have fuel press at the rail, pump whirring etc. with the condition you're having. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Always first off the line, while all the cool people are still staring at their phones.

I had the same issue when I bought my 99 T5 but mine would start every time despite shutting off immediately. Turned out to be the ETM and MAF. MAF didn't throw a code until late and yes spraying starting fluid would keep it running.
Here's the thread on my issue:

No, they speak Swedish. And the Gothenburg dialect is a bit hard to sift through at times. ;)
The thread RigsPGT linked to has some excellent bullet points for you to check through - seems like a very similar issue.
