I have a 2002 Volvo V40 and have been busy replacing various parts on the Passenger front side of the car. I replaced the outer tie rod end, Sway Bar Links, Sway Bar Bushings and the Strut Mount.
The vehicle makes a noise like a loose caliper and rattles on small and large bumps or any deformity in the road. I am wondering if I somehow installed the strut mount incorrectly? The strut mount I used was an after market and I think the noise may have started after I changed the mount.
Anyway with the car on the ground, I can grip the tire on the passenger side at 11 and 1 O'clock positions and there is some movement towards the engine and away. There is a noise of metal hitting metal like as if the rotor was loose. When I take the tire off everything seems tight. I put the tire back on and there is that play again. There is none on the drivers side.
Is it possible for the control arm to create such a rattle? The lower ball joint seems solid.
Thanks in advance

I'm thinking they replaced the spring seat but not the mount or possible your strut plat is bad (it's the one with gears in it at the top of your strut tower). Do you recall what it looked like? Btw, the spring seats are a known issue with these cars (well all Volvo's) and if you don't get a decent one they last no time.
This is your spring seat:

This is your strut mount:

The movement makes me think it's the spring seat. The rattles could be a bad end link on that side.

Other parts, including a rubber ring and a strut plate could be culprits. Here is a link to all of those parts, so check on what you see and post back:

This diagram of your car's front suspension might also help you figure things out...
