Oil Thermostat Leaking Topic is solved

Hi guys , new to the Volvo World. Just got me a 98 S70 T5 originally from canada with a fair share of its issues. first and foremost being the leaking oil thermostat inlet hose.

Now last week i replaced the rdiator and all of the oil line hoses but opted to use generic o rings instead of OEM for the hoses that go into the oil Thermostat, now 1000 miles later its leaking oil.

I did have a fair amount of corrosion in the housing but as you all know, those arent made anymore so its not like i can replace that too easily.Going to redo the job this weekend with oem o rings, looking for a little insight on whether or not i should take any extra steps to make sure those hoses seal correctly in the housing or how to properly clean out the corrosion.

The dealer replaced the 'O' rings on my car twice and then told me it was the pipes that were the problem. I bought the pipes, but when I went to replace them, I found the 'O' rings had been nicked on fitting and hence the leaking.

I ended up removing the whole housing and took it onto my workbench and found old baked on hard oil from a previous leak had not been cleaned off so when the new 'O' ring was fitted it was torn going over the crusty oil.

The oil pipes were fine and I could have re-used them, but I ended up fitting the new ones as I already had everything in bits.

I used a metal scraper to carefully (and I stress carefully) remove the hardened deposits, maybe soaking in de-greaser overnight may work also.

If I recall removing the hosing was tricky as it used Torx headed bolts that were very reluctant to come out. Fitting the housing back on was a little fiddly to keep the gasket in place.

ok Neil, so getting that housing clean as can be is the #1 thing ? or else ill just nick the o rings again ? have you had any other leaks since your repair ?

Use Volvo Green O-rings.
Flip the retaining plate around for better squeeze on the O-rings.

See the thread below, I mentioned the trick about flipping the plate around.
Make sure you have new Torx bolts.
I did this (flipping the plate around 2.5 years ago), zero leak as of today:

If the old bolt heads are not stripped out and the bolts not corroded, it's OK to not replace them. I never have.

I totally agree with erik on this. This is not a high stress part, so provided you can get them out without damaging them, then re-use.

I am glad cn90 put the info on about reversing the retaining bar, as I had forgotten about that.

I planned well ahead when I did this and replaces the bolts, gasket and 'O' rings as I hate doing work twice over. As it turned out the bolts were fine and I just straightened the retainer and re-used it if I remember correctly. I probably might have the other parts if I knew where to find them (no need for them as 99+ cars have a different system).
