Although the timing belt is only 5 years/50k miles old, when it was replaced, it was replaced with a 'kit' which included an idler pulley and also a hydraulic tensioner. As I am going to pull and replace the serpentine belt (was replaced at the same time but shows some cracking) to check on the oil leak at the timing belt end, I may replace just replace the timing belt (but check the pulleys anyway) and as the water pump is probably the original (it has only 100k miles on it), I may replace the water pump for piece of mind. As I am trying to work on a tight but safe budget would this sound ok?
I know there is a debate on water pumps (Aisin v's Hepu), any issues with Hepu as it is somewhat cheaper?
Had fun trying to figure out what engine the car has as it says B5254S (not FS). The 8th digit of the VIn# is a 5 which I believe says the car does NOT have EGR and Motronic 4.3. Is that a correct assumption?
Thanks,
Neil.

I wouldn't hesitate putting in a Dayco or a Gates kit in and scaling back the mileage on when it should be done again by a little. I've been using a Hepu pump (3k+ miles) and it seems fine.

If that belt can help indicate what your t-belt's condition might be in... If it were me, no doubt it'll be replaced asap.
A water-pump with 100k miles is just about what the life expectancy is.
Budget in those maintenance items now or budget in a motor later. Not to mention the roadside/towing fees, time without transportation or renting/borrowing a vehicle...

You could not give me a gates belt and pay for the install on my cars. 1 valve job from a broken new serp belt wrapping around a crankshaft is enough. Expensive lesson... use OEM. It's cheaper in the long run.

Well a lot of interesting views. I was looking at belts and if I only replace the timing belt and water pump that is do-able price wise. The cam seals and crank seal I'll look into. I'm holding off ordering those until I figure where the oil leak(s) is/are, then buy accordingly. I know Corteco are good. May even have a Volvo cam seal kicking about.
I know water pumps can last a lot longer than 100,000 miles, but in this case, 20 years has gone by...!
What is the part number for the timing belt? Vida only gives a 'kit' part number that I can see. Again car is a 97 850 NA with a 4.3 Motronic control. Engine has a mechanical tensioner.
Great service from my buddy. LH front axle assembly (no core return needed), FEQ brand which seems to be the repair shop go to for Volvos. I'll buy inner and outer boots for the RH axle. I have 2 so one should be good.
The wheel bearing is a FAG kit which I am pleased about and the crankshaft pulley engine mount is a Febi-Bilstein.
I also have a new Victor Reinz intake gasket in my stash, so although cheap to buy, it all adds up.
Replaced the wiper lever today on the steering column. Got a good replacement from PnP. I love jobs that should be easy but some tinkerer has been in before you and rounded one of the 2 small Torx screws that hold the top half of the cover on. They have also broken the clasps off the upper portion. Looks like another trip to PnP in the near future.
Tomorrow need to place the order with FCP for the remaining parts I know I need.
Neil.

Well ended up just buying the new Volvo OE timing belt, and will fit the kindly donated Hepu water pump from abscate. Very much appreciated!
I was looking at the continental belt as it is about a third of the Volvo part from FCP, but I decided to stick with Volvo on this important part.
