Sounds like a vacuum leak. Braking hard uses up the vacuum so you put extra air into the engine which it doesn't like.

It's a drag but you have to check all the hoses and find the leaks and replace hoses

The idle air control valve (IAC) hose is often reported having a split

There is also an elbow on the vacuum port under the intake manifold , right side of car, near the thermostat and radiator hose

As abscate mentioned, you have to find that leak...if you don't find it in the lines he mentioned, follow the larger hose (most likely hardened) under the battery and on towards the driver's side under the windshield...there is a junction too along that line- closer to the left fender if my memory serves me right where two lines join together with a plastic connector. On mine, once upon a time, the plastic connector was broken. If still nothing, then I would suspect the brake vacuum pump itself which is not holding a seal.
