What direction do I need to rehook the two lines up to the transmission cooler?

Post by jipsy »

2001 Volvo V40 need to know what direction to rehook the two lines up to the transmission cooler. I was dumb and didn't take a photo or mark them. I realize hot from the transmission to the cooler and from the cooler to the valve, but which one is which on the cooler?

Are you talking about the lines that go into the radiator? If so, wherever they will fit without stressing the lines is fine in my opinion although there probably is a "correct" way...but It really doesn't matter which way they run to be honest...the section of the radiator that cools the transmission fluid is just one big heat-sink for that fluid...if it goes in the top, the fluid will run out the bottom, if it goes in the bottom, it will run out the top! However, it would probably be a good idea to write down which way you did it so that in the future, if you ever did a transmission fluid "flush" by disconnecting one of the lines, you won't have liquid spilling out of the line that you thought was an intake line. Personally, I would put the line from the transmission to the top of the radiator and the line from the bottom of the radiator to the valve, just so logically, gravity will do its thing.

After I posted, I got to thinking and thought that if I were you, I'd still be concerned. Although I stick with my previous opinion, I was correct in saying the top of the transmission to the top line and vice versa is the correct way. Also, something I learned is that the transmission lines don't go into the radiator like I thought they did on your car (like they do on an 850)....there actually is a transmission cooler that sits in front of the radiator. Actually, that's a much better design. My son's 850's radiator breached internally and mixed the transmission fluid with his coolant and caused his transmission to fail...that said, here is a diagram that will help you!
