1995 855 wiper did not park at lowest position on windshield

Post by lcc014 »

Yesterday, my daughter told me that my 855 wiper did not park at lowest position (bottom of windshield) after each wipe.

Wiper motor is "old' (11 years old), wiper linkage is 5 months old, wiper relay is 21 years old (original). When I turned on wipers, they wiped fine the whole range. When I stopped the wipers, they just parked at random position above the bottom of windshield.

So, would it be a losing linkage setup or dying wiper relay ?

Thanks,

Ching-Ho Cheng

Could be the splines are messed up- this happened to my son's old 850 and even though we used all kinds of things to tighten the bolt on (including blue and red thread lock), that never stayed. The solution was for a whole new transmission out of another car. Hopefully you won't have to go that route, but you will most likely need to look at where the arm is bolted on. I truly don't think it's your relay but I'm pretty sure you can swap another one in to test that- If you can grab a .99 VW relay from a junk yard, you'll also have more control when you use your intermittent setting!

Hi,

Not sure if this will help or not, but in my old 88 Hyundai the wipers would do that once in a while, and i'd have to turn them on and back off again to get them to go down all the way. It also helps to WET the windshield if the motor is weak or something because that creates less friction. If it was already wet then of course this wont help.

Good luck with it.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Are you talking about the front or rear wipers? As you say you have an 855 (wagon) and only mention wiper, can we assume you mean rear wiper?

Sometimes the seal around the shaft goes out, then the shaft gets rusty causing the rear wiper to hang up.

Try some good penetrating oil like PBlaster, if that solves it the re-wrap the shaft with self-fusing silicone tape.

It is front windshield wipers. Wiper linkage, as I stated in 1st post, is about 5 months old. So splines are still very new. No slipping happened to both wiper arms. Wiper arm nuts are tight too. I will take the linkage out to check the motor/linkage arm nut.

Sorry, but it wasn't clear to me as you talk about 'wiper', anyway, it is likely the arm splines have worn away. Replace the whole wiper arm.

Problem solved. It was the nut that held linkage to motor shaft. It was "loose". I tightened it again along with loctite. Now, it is back to normal.

Thanks.
