So we recently purchased our first Volvo, a 2006 V70R and boy has it been a doozy so far. To be fair, the car was well serviced up until about 110k miles, and after that, no service records whatsoever. The stealership assured us the car was a 10/10 mechanically, and if Houston wasn't an 8 hour drive from here, I'd shove my foot so far up that salesman's tucchus that he'd be eating my shoelaces like spaghetti noodles. So far we've had to replace all four tires ("40% tread left!"), the PCV system ("doesn't use any oil!"), every single suspension component on the front end, including the 4c struts and shocks in the rear ("car rides like a dream!"), ball joints, LCA's, spring seats, sway bar end links etc., air conditioner compressor and cabin climate sensor ("A/C blows cold!"), the pads and rotors are worn slap the hell out, on the front only thankfully, and finally the engine and transmission support mounts.

On a side note, there is a special rung in Hell reserved for car salesman who sells a car in the Deep South without working a/c.

Anyway, enough of my sob story. The car is down for now until my father gets back around the first of the month from Kansas where he is taking care of some family farm business.

So down to the question at hand, and I apologize for asking this but I could not find anything in the archives.

The car has the HU-850 head unit, with a satellite radio tacked onto it. I think I know the answer to the two-fold problem, but I'd like to find out from some more experienced peoples before I go outlaying more cash.

1) Only the center channel speaker works. No other speakers operate.

2) The antenna picks up nothing but static. I had the a/c guy check and he said nothing was unplugged behind the radio, so that's not it. Furthermore, I can't just select a station via the dial, only using the "seek" button and it obviously just rolls right past everything.

I took the car to a friend's car audio shop and he said he figured that it was the amp under the passenger seat causing both issues.

Any thoughts? Also, is there a way to tell visibly from the outside the difference between the 200 and 300 watt amplifiers?

I think in your case, blame radio HU-850. With this radio is quite common problems.
The best solution is to connect the other 8xx series car for inspection.
Sorry for my English.

Your English is better than my Swahili, Punjabi, Latin, Sanskrit, etc. Aww hell, your English is better than my English. I'm from Alabama.

In all seriousness, thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.

Anyone else have any suggestions or run into this problem before?

Most of these radios go bad with different issues but yours sounds like both the AMP and the radio are bad
Center channel does not run off the AMP it runs off the radio's small internal amp
Make 100% sure the underseat amp is plugged into the right socket and that power is getting to it
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP
