Lots of brake dust on my S70 front rims.

Post by AhmedS70 »

Hello guys

I replaced the front brake pads on my 1999 S70 last summer with OEM Volvo ones. I had no idea the Volvo brake pads were so dusty. Every time I clean my wheels they will get dirty in a couple of days. And its just the front ones. The rear ones have the Volvo brake pads also but they don't get dirty at all. Right now I have two options. I could buy the Akebono ceramic brake pad set or I can buy the brake dust shields. The brake pads have less then 10K miles of them so I can probably sell them on Ebay and get some money for them.

I see only one answer, still it's the correct one. Just a warning, I bought the cheapest Akebono out there, and I can tell they definitely grip less than the OEM pads. But I didn't have to touch the wheels with water until now.

I use Bosch (FCP kit) and they're really dusty as well!

Same here - bought Volvo OEM pads, and they're dusty, but the car stops exactly when I want it to. ;)

I bought a set of 302mm Zimmerman's with SS lines and now I'm torn on pads as I like the OEMs and i don't feel exploring although on my other "go fast" car I used Hawk pads with minimal dust and good bite.
I will probably end up with OEM but will buy a couple of cases of Sonax wheel cleaner and get used to cleaning wheels. I also have a Speed Master wheel brush (need the junior for our Volvos)

My 2000 R has Akebono pads, and I find they are less grippy when cold, but once warm are really good like the OE pads. Just have to alter the driving style when pads are cold, which is good as it gives time for the engine to warm up properly before hitting the brakes!!

Love not having to clean the dust off the front wheels. Rears are OE and get dusty. Car gets washed regularly and as wheels get swapped in winter, they get a thorough cleaning front and back. Powder coating the whole rim also makes it much easier to clean than the original paint on the OE rims.

Scot, can you share which Akebono you bought? Mine are the EUR794, box says Euro Ultra Premium (but no one can guarantee I didn't got a fake product) I don't have an issue with them in the winter, same grip as summer time, just really not up to the OEM ones I had both at cold and warmed up. Have to agree, for people who like to have the wheels relatively clean, this is such a relief: I could not stand any more cleaning the wheels, and mine have some pretty simple design. Worth mentioning, the OEM pads were not dusty during the cold season.

I wish I could, but the PO had them installed and I can't find on the paperwork which version they are. The challenge will be finding replacements when needed. I do recall him telling they were Akebono as I had commented on the rims not being black. I have just re-checked the receipt and all it says is pads and rotors replaced but no parts details. He worked at a repair shop so they have not given all the info for some reason or he paid under the table/supplied his own parts. Sorry not able to help.
