97 850 NA injector seal question

Post by scot850 »

As part of the refurbishment of this car I am pulling the intake to find the source(s) of some hidden oil leaks on the front of the block.

I recall from when I did this many moons ago on a 93 NA there were rubber rings around the injector body where it pushes into the intake (not the 'o' ring seals on the injector). There does not appear to be any on this car, is that ok or are they required?

I am planning to replace the 'o' rings on the injectors as they may be originals and 20 years old. I see Volvo does a kit. Does this kit only have one lower and 1 upper or all 10 'o' rings for all the 5 injectors (i.e. 10)? At about $8 US as FCP if that is for 2 it is stupid!

Thanks,

Neil.

If you're talking about the "doughnut" shaped around base where the injectors go into the manifold itself, they are required as they prevent vacuum leaks/ dust and debris from being sucked straight into the valves. The kits I've seen (not necessarily from FCP) but the ones I got were a full set. But call and ask, won't hurt anyway to double check.

There is a' donut' shaped seal at both ends of the injector. Basically a thick 'o' ring. However there is also a second 'spacer' ring that is sometimes sits on the outside of the injector body in the recess at the bottom end of the injector and sits in a recess in the intake manifold. There is one per injector.

Are they required? Not sure. I always make sure a full set is in there. Junkyard.

I think there are different tip designs as far as the injectors go. Some have two rubber o rings and a plastic pintle cap that prevents the lower o-ring getting sucked into the intake manifold. The pintle caps can´t be removed without braking them but you can cefully cut the old one, rip it off and slide the new oring over the pintle cap. a squeezer comes in handy there to help slide the oring over the rim.

But then I´ve also seen photos od P80 injectors without the pintle cap, the lower o-ring was just on the injector. If this was correct I don´t know, but I came across a few Fotos like this when searching info on p80 injectors a while back

I thought Neil was talking about the rubber "washers" that sit in the manifold, I missed the bit about the o-rings.

You can remove old pintle caps by first heating them with a heat gun until they get pliable. Sometimes they will break anyway but that usually works. I have spare injectors around, if I break a pintle cap I will grab another one from on old (factory) injector. New o-rings is a great idea, I have replaced several sets and always felt it was a good move, but I don't know about the Volvo kit. I got some from an o-ring dealer.

Timely topic as my injector seals are nearly 18yrs old. They haven't even been out of the IM. Would be interesting to test while out to view the spray pattern.

To clarify everyone, the O-rings that go into the round divot where the injector sits on the manifold itself NOT the injector but the injector goes it and seals it to the manifold?

This is the part I am trying to find out about:

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -6842408oe

In the picture tryingbe has added of the intake manifold, these are like a seat for the injector and sit in the wider recess ring at the top of the injector port.

I spoke to a long time dealer foreman and he says the part kind of helps align the injector to keep it straight in the port, but not all cars seem to have them. I've ordered a set as I recall our 93 850 GLT had them.

I'll decide on fitting or not depending on how much of a pig they are to fit!

Neil.

That's what I was talking about, they are one of the easiest things to do on these cars. Just un-plug the injector, pull it out, pull the old o-ring out if it stuck in the manifold, put the new one and reverse directions. Just watch it, some stay on the injector for a split second then tend to find their ways down behind the manifold never to be seen again until the manifold is pulled. Which isn't worth pulling it, wait till something else has to be done to grab the dropped ones.
