S80 sunroof, loose metal laying in drain track see pic

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 sunroof, loose metal laying in drain track see pic

Post by Mojobaby27 »

My sunroof leaked for the first time on the driver side, this past week, so I opened up sunroof to investigate and found this piece of metal laying in the drain track loose, any idea how it should go or where it should go? can't seem to figure out what it does or why it would just be sitting lose my drain track ? Any help appreciated, I'll try to attach a pic, Maybe someone could take a picture of their front drain track sunroof area for me to see how its supposed to go properly. Thanks

First pic shows the metal strip laying on the roof after I pulled it out of the drain track .

This is of my moonroof on my 2004 S80. If you want other photos aimed differently let me know. This is my first attempt at posting a photo so I hope you can see what you need. Be careful with your sunshade as the fabric started to fall, and it cost me $900.00 to have a new one installed. June

Thanks for the reply, the pic I took is of the front drain track ( running paralel with front windshield) if you look in that drain track there are holes at each end where the water runs out, that's where the metal piece was laying. I have read that the metal mounts to the bottom of the sunroof, but not sure on that yet.

These photos show the edge of the siding glass. One from the inside looking up with the roof open a little and the edge where the seal shows in the other. Parallel to the windshield was just a gap for the water to drain in I would guess because it has drain holes on either side. I couldn't see anything in that area that could come loose. I will take more pictures of the front area in the morning if it will help. My roof has been opened only a few times in the last 12 years. No more than 10 times. It simply was a part of the T6 package that could not be deleted or my car would not have it. Basically my roof is unused. How long in inches is the piece of metal? Your leak is on the driver side, though wouldn't it stand to reason the metal piece came from that side? June

After looking through lots of post I found the statement below and after looking on the bottom of the sunroof glass and pulling back the shade I could see the old glue marks so I can tell where it used to go. Don't know how it ended up in the front track(exterior). At least it didn't break anything and the sunroof still works will have to get some Jb weld and glue it back on using some c-clamps.

" there is one at front edge and at rear edge of the glass.
The evidence of where it was located will be on glass."

Thanks so much for your help and pics. I'll try taking a pic before and after fix.

June, I think you can see it in your last picture on the inside in front of the last chrome metal strip (towards front of the car) there's some black piece hanging down, I think that's it.
Thanks again for your help.

My pleasure, I know how frustrating a moonroof problem can be. I had a nightmare with the moonroof 30 years ago in my new 1986 Buick Park Avenue. The roof endlessly leaked eventually ruining the head liner and upolstry . I smoke and back then I opened the roof every time I drove until the problems started at about a year old. Buick never could get it fixed right. The problem continued for several years until I traded the car in. I really do hope that piece fixes the leak. June

Here's a pic of underside front edge of sunroof ( The little piece that looks like Velcro is part of the original gluing system used to hold the metal bar on the bottom of the sunroof ). The first pic shows me holding the metal piece, if you look at the rust spot on the bottom of that piece you can see where it might line up with the Velcro looking spot on bottom of sunroof ( notice the headrest for orientation of front of sunroof).
If you zoom on the second pic you can see the spot near the front of the sunroof that looks like Velcro, before gluing it back.

I carefully looked at my roofs edge and underside edges and found nothing with velcro or even that looks like it could come loose. I took a few more pictures like your last ones for your comparison. The drains must have hoses connected, could one be leaking or clogged? It looks to me like it would take a lot of water leaking by the seal around the glass to overflow the trenches with the drains to finally get inside the car. Or could a rust hole exist?

mojobaby - I have that exact same piece sitting in my garage from 2001 V70. I found mine in the rear track of the sunroof, so I assumed it came from there. Of course, if it attaches to the glass then it very well could have fallen off when the glass was open and ended up residing and rattling around in the back. I'll take a look at mine later today and see if I can see evidence of where it should be glued back.
