1998 v70 motor swap

trying to determine what range of year volvo i can search for in the successful motor exchange for my 1998 v70 with a blown head gasket??
I have a 1998 v70 R available, but not sure that would be the one.

Is the car with the blown head gasket a turbo or normally aspirated?

In general you can swap like for like (turbo or N/A) on any year between 95 and 98. In '99 things changed pretty dramatically but the newer engines (99+) can be used with some modifications. If your current v70 is a high pressure turbo then the R engine would work fine. The only real difference between the standard 2.3 liter turbo and the R is the exhaust manifold and the ECU tuning.

And if your current 98 V70 is a GLT with the LPT, then the R engine would work fine if will also get an ECU from a 98 V70 HPT car. You will want to pay attention to emissions too (basically the air pump, does your car have it?), to make sure they are the same between the car with the donor ECU and your car.
