oil pressure upon startup

Post by Clemens »

On my 96 R it has happened recently twice that after Startup I could hear there being too Little oil pressure soewhere cuz I could hear a knocking/clicking sound that went away after revving up the engine. My 95NA has been doing this forever but I run it with 15W-40 as opposed to the R with 0W-40.

I recently had the oil pressure checked on the R which was 3.0 bar (43psi), which is where it should be, I guess. Oil filter is Mann, oil has 4000 km on it. Something to worry about, something to check out (what?). the o-rings in the pump have never been replaced, but the pressure is good, light never came on during operation, goes out immediately after Startup, no metal flakes in the oil, so I don´t know what to think of that. Once warmed up it runs really nice.

Just thinking out loud here, maybe someone has an opinion.

btw, I have 290.000 km on it now.

I would not worry about that Clemens. In startup, there can be some tapping for a few seconds, but if the engine is not loaded there is no wear.

One of the great internet myths is that "most engine wear occurs on startup" which was started years ago, or decades ago.

Does it crop dust? Consume oil? If it does consume oil, how much oil per full fill up of fuel?

That's a unique metric.

Replacing the O-rings in the sump may cure this although if the low oil pressure light isn't coming on then I wouldn't be too concerned.

I don´t really have to refill the oil. I changed the oil in May, drove 3000+ Miles since then and added less than a quart. So the valve stem seals are good (my 95NA has worn valve stem seals and can take half a quart per full fill up).
