splines on new wiper arm 850 ?

Post by jmaggioc »

Hello all. I just replaced the wiper linkage (transmission) on my 1997 850 because of stripped splines on the passenger side shaft. I installed it and ordered a new arm (genuine Volvo) from FCP. When I opened the plastic bag, I noticed that there aren't any splines in the opening of the new arm (part number 9151088) Is this arm defective or does the taper of the shaft hold the arm in place?

I think that is as it should be. But if you feel it is loose after tightening it down you can order some anti rotation paste (i don't know the proper name) at a bicycle (online) shop. It is used to prevent handlebars from moving.

There are no splines on the hole in the wiper arm, it is smooth, soft(ish) metal. The splines are in the hardened shaft of the motor. And those splines almost never strip out, what happens very often is the much softer metal of the arm gets wedged in between the grooves of the splines, and makes the shaft appear to be smooth. A good wire brushing will clean out the jammed in metal and the transmission shaft will be good to go.

OP I understand the case on your car may be different, but I post that up as a general FYI for other readers.

Erik, thanks for posting. 'Caused a light-bulb moment to a similar issue I have with the passenger side "slipping" in light mist conditions.

Very Helpful.
