2000 S70 Driver Side Front Axle Removal

Back at Harry's today harvesting a driver side front axle from a 2000 S70. I did some extensive reading here and took my mason's chisel with me. Seven bolts and three taps later, the axle was mine. This was probably one of the easiest parts pulls I've done. I'm definitely sold on the chisel method.

Agreed. It has been the most reliable method for me also.

Mason's chisel method? How does that work?

You use the chisel as a wedge. Tap it up offset from the axle shaft from the bottom and the axle will pop right out.

I used the lug wrench that comes with the car. Inserted between the cv joint and transmission housing and pry.

Prying with anything can put a lot of pressure on the trans case. Usually not a problem just saying. The wedge is hands down the best way to go, tap it straight up.

Prying works, I've done it but it can take a lot of force and grief! I agree with Erik11.
Next time I will try the hammer/chisel method.

7 Bolts? I only remove 3, am I doing something wrong?

I took the brake caliper off to get it out of the way (two bolts each side = 4 bolts). I'm probably doing something wrong. 2 strut bolts, bolt at the end of the axle. Steering knuckle pinch bolt and a nut on the bottom of the outer tie rod end, so if you count nuts and bolts and you opt to remove the brake caliper -- it is actually a total of 9, not 7.
