car starts cold but once warm dies on me

Post by flahaye »

OK,

Here how it goes.

Volvo V70 SE 2000 350K km on it.

1) when the car is cold, it starts no problem
2) When the car is warmed up, the car won`t start.
- All lights are on
- I can only here some kind of hissing noise.
- After a few minutes of trying, it does start.

Any clues gentlemen ???

Thanks

Francois

Is the lamda light on? Have you had the codes checked? Does the temperature gauge read normally?

It could be many things but without a scan it will be difficult to tell.

Symptoms are very suggestive of bad ECT sensor.

I used to live in Montreal, same weather as Burlington VT or Albany NY etc.

Bad ECT sensor is a good idea.

You can check the ECT's resistance to find out, e.g. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/vie ... 6&start=28

Thanks for the answer. I will check. But in fact. No codes from lambda.... Weather is not that hot. Just that when engine is warm i cant get the car to start. When i try to start the engine I get the hissing noise with sometimes engine reving up. After 10-20 times it starts. But sometimes it starts systematically. No problems...

Check for vacuum leaks. Car runs richer when cold, and maybe running lean when hot. Also check fuel pressure at the rail when cold and hot.

Sorry guys got sidetracked by persoanl issues.

For the last post. I just hear the hissing noise. No cranking.

I got suggestion to replece the ignition switch but same issue.

Let me know if any other ideas.

It is getting annoying be ause car starts in the morning but when istop anywhere, it can take up to 5 minutes before it starts.

Always hearing that hissing noise but at one point it cranks up.

Thanks

Francois

Check the fuel pressure. Needs to be >43 psi. Once warm I find the pump pressure drops off. Have you replaced the fuel relay?

Have the car read for failure codes. Could also be an issue with the ETM.
