P80 headlight wiper motor warning!

Post by scot850 »

Well, don't you just love it that after all the pain of servicing a headlight wiper motor, disassembling the front of the car, installing it, check it all works and you go to fit the last part, and you discover that all the work was a waste of time!!!

I have removed and replaced wiper motors before, but never noticed that there are 2 significant differences in 850 and C/S/V70 motors.

1) The 98 850 I have has a different mounting bracket for the motor to the slam panel (they can be swapped over)

2) And most importantly, they have different shaft lengths!! I have never noticed this before, or heard of it mentioned anywhere. The 850's have a longer shaft to clear the trim panel under the headlight and the headlight presumably protrudes slightly further out. Having fitted a motor that must have come from a V70 (although I'm sure I pulled it from an 850) I have now un plugged it as it squishes the wiper blade do both ends don't touch, but it also fouls on the rubber pipe for the headlight wiper washer. It also has a high probability of scratching the trim under the headlight.

You can use an V/C/S70 motor in an 850 but you will have to swap the wiper arm shaft over.

This is the link on the how to install the wiper motor on an 850 I was discussing recently:

I would say it's another SAAB story (having owned one), but Volvo has it's own versions of Sob Stories, imcompatibilities, mid-year changes resulting in confusion, so on and so on........

I DO feel your pain......geesh.

I also feel you..
I have recently repaired my motors, just to find them going really slow and not completing their turns after reinstalling them. I was so sure about the problem when I discovered the jammed gears inside, but evidently there was more. I am now gathering strength for another disassembly.

I got rid of this HL system back in 2000 when the car was new.
The gain (cleaning HL lens) is small compared with the loss (loss of juice).
I kept filling the resevoir more than usual, thus the HL wiper delete mod.

Thanks guys for the shoulder to cry on!

Erik, my brother made the same comment. They get 12 rain days a year, so really not an issue. I just like all the stuff on my cars to work! It's the engineer in me!
