Had a mechanic find an oil leak at the rear cam seal. When he got the cover off, he said there was no seal to replace. Anyone ever had that happen? I've own this car for 15+ years and I know it hasn't ever been changed since I have owned it.
Comments appreciated.
Oil leak rear cam seal
Sounds like you need a new mechanic.
Could the seal have been loose and fallen out during the disassembly? Possibly.
The seal cannot detach itself from the engine because the distributor (98 and prior) blocks it on the intake cam and the cam position sensor blocks it on the exhaust cam.
If the seal were not present at all, the engine would be leaking like crazy.

On the 99 and 2000 intake cam there was no seal installed. Just the plastic cover. A cam seal can be installed then pop on the plastic cover. I don't think the plastic cover is reuseable. I always install a new cover.
