My 2004 XC90 won't turn over

Post by vonvon12 »

I recently ran out of gas.in my 2004 XC90. I put 2 1/2 gallons in it and it will not start. Do I need or can I perform some type of reset. I check to see if gas was flowing and it is but it won't turn over. It was running great before I ran out of gas. Please help...

Is the battery dead form trying to start it while out of gas?
I'd add a little more gas and charge the battery or get a boost.
Always check your fuses first.
Good luck

What happens to the lights when you try and start it? Do they get dim, or not even come on? Did you try cranking for a while when it ran out and wore the battery down? If yes, that sounds like a dead battery which you'll need to rectify (charge or replace).

How do you know you now have fuel flowing if it doesn't crank? If the battery is dead, the fuel pump won't run and you won't get any fuel. Also, if the engine isn't cranking, it won't start the fuel pump.

I could see the scenario where running out of gas could cause the fuel pump to overheat (no gas to cool it) and fail. But that would give you a crank-no-fuel symptom.

How sure are you that it was out of gas? Some sort of fuel blockage or pump failure might feel the same way, but wouldn't be fixed by just adding gas.
