FCP's extended service tune up kit includes a set of upper and lower injector o-rings.
Those are the ones where you take the injector apart, replace the rings, and put it back together, right?
Is this something I should be doing preemptively? The car's got 200+ish on it, long-dead odometer.

Those o-rings should be just upper and lower seals...black rubber o-rings.
The ones which require taking apart of injector are the hard spacers...yellow(or light brown) ones.

If you're pulling old injectors, you should buy the kit preemptively. You will probably break one of the pintle caps.
While you're at it, you might as well replace the filters too.

I'm going to have the rail off for a PCV job, at the same time as a comprehensive tune-up.
I wouldn't have suspected an injector issue, and wouldn't touch them, except the tune-up kit came with the o-rings, so somebody must have thought it was a good idea.
I don't see an actual injector rebuild kit on FCP's site, but I do see two different types of seals besides the o-rings. Those are the internal ones, then? I've never had an injector apart.
So, point blank: what preventive maintenance should I be doing to the injectors in this circumstance? Should I be tearing them apart just because they gotta suck by 200K? Should I leave them be but be prepared for damage taking them out?

Ya might consider upgrading to a slightly higher rated set of injectors at this time. Minimal bump in power, but the age combined with amount of use has to be considered, especially with today's fuel qualities being pushed through them.
Grabbing the higher flow rated ones from a salvage yard volvo to have rebuilt might be the most economical way about it.

There is NO gain with larger injectors without ecu remaping.Larger injectors can only make problems on stock ecu.
You can remove the old ones and send them to professional ultrasonic cleaning.

I'll be doing this service as well. If you are pulling the rail, see what condition the o-rings and pintle caps are in. You can decide for yourself at that point if you want to replace them. (Obviously if you break any of the pintle caps you'll have to replace those.)kcodyjr wrote: So, point blank: what preventive maintenance should I be doing to the injectors in this circumstance? I would recommend replacing the pintle caps and o-rings, just because it's an easy job with cheap parts and you're already in there. Chances are you will have to replace one or two. The filter baskets I replaced, but it took enough body strength that I was afraid for the injector. The old ones didn't look bad after 240k, so I probably would skip that.
Not sure if the 850 has a fuel pressure damper, but my V70's damper's o-ring was in sorta iffy shape when it came out.

If the pintle caps are so prone to breaking, I'd rather just plan on replacing them.
I don't see 'em on FCP. Got a source? Tell me I don't have to go crawling through a junkyard...

Historical threads posted have suggested otherwise.misha wrote:There is NO gain with larger injectors without ecu remaping.Larger injectors can only make problems on stock ecu.
