Rough idle 01 T6 Topic is solved

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Rough idle 01 T6

Post by Legofan »

So far I have cleaned the ETM and MAF with no change in idle. Idle is rough when at a stop light after engine warms up. Sometimes it is very rough trying to pull the car forward and other times it is very slight. It is intermittent and about 20% of the time it will idle without any issues at all. I do have a CEL on and have to go to my local shop for a look when I have time. I just can't figure out why it would have such a hard time idling when all other driving is perfectly fine. If its an ETM or MAF or O2 issue then I'm assuming the issue will be there at all rpms and cause terrible gas mileage and hesitation which I have none of these things. The problem is that "rough idle" can mean a long list of things wrong which is frustrating and I've read that the engine code might very well not point to the obvious issue. It would be something like code xxxxx which means lean condition. There's at least four things I can think of that would cause a lean condition.

Eh, I'm ranting.

I'm stumped and annoyed, what do you guys think?

I think you should have the car read and post in the codes. At least get an ELM327 and read them yourself from a pad or phone.

Yes many codes can point to different items however if idle is affected usually the code will pinpoint.

You're right, I will do that.

What's this ELM327? This is news to me, very interesting. I will definitely get this, but I see a bunch. Is there a special brand I should look for?

Hi Legofan,
I have the same car only one year older. When I bought my car 4 years ago it was perfect in and out, but mechanically it had every issue the S80 is known for. It surged and hesitated. It had rough idle and so on. Putting a rebuilt tranny in it solved 90% of the issues. I am not suggesting that though. I do recall a time when I replaced my MAF just for good measure. I bought a cheap MAF from Auto Warehouse and it really messed up the idle bad. So I threw it out since they did not stand behind there product and put the old original Volvo MAF back in and it was better again but not great. I then bought a bosch brand MAF(not from Auto Warehouse) and that did the trick. They run around $200 bucks, might be a good place to start. They really are awesome cars I drive mine about once a week and enjoy it to the fullest.

I do have a genuine bosch(volvo) maf, I won't bother with anything else. Interesting note about the trans, but she idles the same in P and N.

I've read that the 00 and 01 engines are a bit different too.

Buy the ELM 327 which suits your device whether Android or I Pad/I Phone. If Android you just download Torque from Play Store and if I Pad they will usually provide some software on a disc with the ELM 327. I've bought the blue mini-type twice for my Android (under $15) and had minimal issues apart from lack of connection upon startup so I put a gauge on Torque such as engine temperature to see if connection is good before I go into the Fault codes menu.

Awesome tip precopster! I got an ELM327 and pulled a code P0014 "B" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance(Bank 1)

Next step is to clean or replace the CVVT?

As I recall bank 1, if you are looking at the engine, is the left(passenger/timing belt) side?

A little history, had the timing belt service done by the Volvo dealership near me about a month ago and it idled badly before that. I'm pissed they never checked the CVVT so I might go in there and make a fuss.

3 things may have happened (but not necessarily all at once :D ):

1) They may have mis-timed the engine by a notch (or 2)
2) CVVT solenoid on top of the engine is failing or requires a good clean
3) CVVT hub is failing

Took it to the dealer, ended up being a broken intercooler hose. Problem solved.
