CTA Ball Joint Removal Tool for Volvo's

Post by bluezerby »

Does anyone have any experience using this tool to remove a ball joint?

I can see how it would be helpful to install a ball joint but I'm not seeing how it would be helpful in removing one.

That's just an install tool, skip to 5:10 for removal.

Great tool actually but no instructions. The couplers actually connect to a slide hammer and then to the ball joint. 3 or 4 good slides and the ball joint pops right out. I used it without pulling the steering knuckle. Took about 6 minutes per side.

I performed the ball joint service without that special tool. I bought an impact hammer (air) to get the ball joint separated from the knuckle (works well!). Then I just a piece of aluminium pipe to gently knock the new ball joint in place.

Do not use the bolts to "pull" the ball joint in place! The threads are not strong enough for that.
