VVT noise (only lasts till warm)

Post by Bikewatch2000 »

Hi

I recently bought an 02 registered (03 model) v40t with approx 200000kms (approx 120,000 miles)
the car had been sat for a while before i got it.

I didn't notice the noise before as when i test drove it it was fine and with the swedish weather i had the blowers on full to clear the windows.

but now when you start it from cold you can hear the tick tick tick noise from the VVt solenoid/pulley.

I have confirmed this by starting it without the solenoid connected (no noise) and then connecting whilst running (noise starts)

BUT, after about 2-3 mins running the noise disappears and doesn't return until you start it again later
(if you start again when its still within normal operating temps theres no noise)

I know the car is due for an oil and filter change.

My questions is, in my understanding if the solenoid or pulley were faulty it would be a constant noise whilst running ?
If you watch and listen its an instantaneous stop not a gradual decreasing in volume but a distinct stop like turning off a light.

also when i removed the engine covers it is apparent that the solenoid has been changed as the bolts are all new and the valve is shiney and clean without any oxidisation and the edges of the gasket sticking out are absolutely pristine. I know looks don't guarantee its new but in comparison to everything else under the covers it sticks out like a sore thumb.

thanks
Tony

I would not worry too much about a tick - when the hubs start to go they growl constantly. I have had a growler on mine for about 25,000 miles now. Ill change it this summer.

Weird, It almost sounds like it could be some kind of oil circulation issue.
How cruddy is the inside of the engine? Granted that's very difficult to assess.
Has the PCV system ever been cleaned?
You're due for an oil change anyway, why not run some crankcase cleaner through before the oil change?
