Just replaced ECT Sensor... Fan still runs after shutdown

Post by mbaskette »

Working on my 2000 Volvo V70 XC...

This morning I have replaced the ETC Sensor (and thermostat while in there) in an effort to fix the issue of my cooling fan running after shutting down the car. This sensor seemed to be the #1 item on the punch list for this issue. After getting everything back together and topping off the coolant again, I took her out for a good solid run to get everything heated up again. Rolled back into the driveway, parked it, switched it off and removed the key. Fan still running :( .

What is next on the punch list???? Fan relays???

Thanks
Mike

You might want to look into the fan relay. From what I've experienced, if the car has been running a while, the fan will run for a few minutes after shutting off the engine. But that was on a hot summer day. I don't know that it should be running on after turning off the car, especially in cooler weather.

Thanks... about 54 this morning when I took it out to test the work. Certainly not hot day issue.

It should do that on 2000 and later cars.Earlier models behave like that only when ect is bad.
2000 and later models owners says that it's normal.

My 2000 fan does run after the car is switched off. But again only when I have been driving hard or outside temp is high.

Not sure how long the fan runs for, but maybe if you have a way of measuring the under hood temp, you could monitor the temp with the hood closed and see when the fan switches off and see if the temp is consistent in range when it does. If it is still running all the time, then I'd suspect there is a temp sensor gone rogue or the relay is stuck on.

Great... well the thermostat and ECT I removed were pretty grungy, so I guess I may have upgrade a functioning system.

Hmm... my cousin's '99 has done that once or twice, but mine has never done that. My dad's old E53 X5 used to run after turning the engine off.

It's supposed to keep running if the engine is still hot enough to need it.
Have you plugged in with anything to see realtime temp readings?
How long does it run?
If it's not more than a few minutes, it's probably just doing it's job.
