Jacked the front and tested the wheel for play. I was looking for play in the hubs, but they didn't have any at 6&12. However they did have about 1/2 inch play at 9&3 with a solid/audible clunk at the 'end' of each play.

I just replaced the inner and outer tie rod ends 1 month ago, does anyone have suggestions for what this could be? What to check next?

Check the control arms, both of the bushings and the ball joint.

1/2 inch is a TON of play. Like bmdubya says the key is to look at what has motion. that is much more relevant than 3-6 or 9-12. You'll be bale to see it moving somewhere. Control arm ball joint is where I would look first, as noted above. Don't rule out bad tie rods if they were the $12 ones, look there too.

I double checked and it's actually much closer to 1/16, you're right 1/2 would be way too much. The control arms seems to be sturdy. The movement is definitely the tie rods, on both sides. I can visually see them moving towards and away from the steering rack. It's an equal amount of movement on both sides with a light clunk sound coming from at least where the inner tie rod meets the steering rack, if not further in I can't tell. I used the TRW kit from FCP, so I feel pretty good about them, unless I seriously messed up the install.

Edit: this might not surprise anyone, but the movement is equal to the play in the steering wheel when the car is off and steering wheel locked. When I move the wheel hub back and forth I can see the steering wheel move back and forth to the extent of the lock. My gut would've been that's normal, but I'm guessing there should be no play in the steering wheel when it's locked

BTW I'm happy to move this over to another thread, I don't want to take over this thread.

That sounds like a normal amount of play, if that's the case. As long as it's nothing beyond what is turning the steering wheel (and of course as long as you don't see anything in the suspension moving around) you're good.

Finally got to the point both front struts are replaced. I had one sway bar link that was toast - leaked grease everywhere. Replaced strut, strut spring seat, sway bar links, and bearings/mounts. Totally forgot about part 30647969, so I ended up reusing those for the moment and will order them soon. Made the mistake of forgetting to zip tie the ABS sensor wire mount on one side, so I'll be back in there tomorrow fixing that temporary lapse of judgement.

The noise level and handling difference is amazing.

Anyone know if we have some discounts with Colorado Driveshaft? My carrier bearing is toast.

I connected a 8673135 Volvo amp to the SC-816 stereo in my 2000 V70. I had earlier changed out the speakers, (two pairs of cheapo Hertz K165) which sounded better, but the head unit sounded like it was working too hard. The bottom seemed to drop out as the volume when up.

I got a 6 pin din cable and the speaker output plug for the amp, spent about an hour adding wires to the plugs and voila..pretty darned impressive sound.

Eventually, I'm going to lose the stock Volvo head unit. I just think that it's not very good. I'll get a single din without cd or tape taking up space and add storage...eventually. Too many projects, not enough time.

For now, tho, combined with adding an aux input plugging a 10 buck bluetooth receiver into it, my Volvo audio sounds way better than it should.

Its best to test for play with someone holding the wheel firmly so you really can see what moves and where the play is.

back and forth with steering wheel locked is normal, sounds like you are ok, and don't need a rack! Be very careful talking to spouses about racks.
