Clunk/thump on acceleration when engine cold

Post by Vents »

Hi all,

I have a 2002 V70 manual D5 120kW which I really love :). It has ~380k km (~240k miles) on the clock. Recently, as the weather got colder (close to freezing), it started making an audible clunk/thump noise when pressing on or letting off the accelerator pedal. It's especially noticeable at low RPMs in 1st and 2nd gear, barely noticeable in 3rd and unnoticeable in 4th and 5th gear (or in neutral). As the engine warms up (either by driving a few km`s or just starting it up and letting it idle for a few minutes) this noise disappears. If it weren't for this, I would have guessed that an engine or torque mounts were gone (the clunk is pretty similar to one you get with bad engine mounts), but now I'm kind of looking towards the transmission.
Although I just checked the transmission oil and it looks clear and is up to level (was changed ~15k miles ago). Also, the gears shift pretty easy and the gearbox isn't making any "other" noises, hence I'm not really sure.
So, has anyone had a similar experience or any idea what to look at, test or expect (like, should I be looking for a new gearbox :) )? Any advice or ideas will be appreciated!

Best regards,
Vents

P.S.
The only other problems I have with the car right now is some weird random (there are silent days and "omg my wheels are gonna fall off days") knocking/clunking noise from front right corner when going over small bumps or even road surface cracks at slow speed, and a quite loud (excessive) popping noise from underneath the valve cover when oil cap is removed (I'm presuming it's coming from vacuum pump).

P.S.S.
A little bit of related service history on the car:
Less than 5k miles ago:
* All four shock absorbers, spring seats and strut mounts,
* Outer tie rods,
* Lower control arm bushing,
* Anti roll bar end links,
* Engine oil and filter (still up to level, changed every 10k km, ~6.5k miles),
About 10k miles ago:
* Power steering pump (used),
* AC compressor bearing,
About 15k miles ago:
* Transmission oil (full service - all fluids, filters, belts, etc.),
* Front engine mount (other mounts look OK)
* Top engine torque mount
About 70k miles ago:
* Flywheel and clutch.

What about transmission torque rod, sway/stabilizer bar bushings?

Transmission torque rod looks OK and doens't seem to have any play. Sway bar bushings also look decent enough.
But as this clunk goes away with engine warming up, to me any bushings seems an unlikely cause.

What about slack in axle bolts? Otherwise, if engine pads are OK, it could be simply worn gears in differential.

Hi there, did you ever come to a resolution? I have a similar problem, I’m leaning towards cvvt hub or turbo but help would be appreciated
