Hello, I just bought a used 2000 V70 SE with 68000 miles on it. I love the car, it looks like it just came out of the showroom. One little problem though, this car has the B 5244 S engine, no turbo and it runs great except when I come to a stop the idle speed drops to a point where the engine almost stalls and then it immediately goes up to about 700 rpm's and runs nice and smooth. One more thing, I cannot find the transmission dipstick. Oh yes, no distributor and coil. The manual does not give any information about these items.
Can you help? Thank you.
New(to me) 2000 V70 SE, a few questions

Believe there's a tranny software download for this...could also be the start of the dreaded ETM problem. Either way, ask your dealer for the software upgrade...should be free.

Dealer only software....you won't be able to have this done anywhere else. Just ask the dealer about it. Someone answered in the same way but was more committed to the ETM Warranty (software download, then ETM replacement if that doesn't work) over on the Brickboard where you posted.

I have the same car as the original poster, and am experiencing the same problem with the RPMs dropping when coming to a stop. I've had the ETM software upgraded wioth no change to this.MadeInJapan wrote:Dealer only software....you won't be able to have this done anywhere else. Just ask the dealer about it. My car has the AW5 transmission (PRND43L), and according to Volvo Cars North America customer service, there's no transmission software upgrade for my car (I gave them the VIN). According to the TSB text, the transmission software upgrade only applies to "certain V70 XC and C70 vehicles, model year 2000 and certain S80 models, model year 2000 and some 2001."
I'm interested in finding out what the cause is as well, and am glad to see someone else with the same problem.

I have the same car, same year, same issue with the RPMs dipping real low upon stopping.peti wrote:Hello, I just bought a used 2000 V70 SE with 68000 miles on it. Dipstick: Volvo started chopping the trans dipstick to reduce the likelihood of an owner putting in the wrong kind of fluid. It's still there, though... Open the hood, look down between the cooling fan and engine, to the right a little. You'll see a 1.5 inch diameter rubber air hose about 12 inches down. Push it to the right a little to get it out of the way, and you'll see the yellow dipstick top. BEWARE! If your car has the AW5 transmission, and it probably does (in the car on the shfter, if you have PRND43L, then you have the AW5), you MUST NOT USE REGULAR ATF in there...it takes Volvo's synthetic "special" ATF oil. Check your manual.peti wrote:One more thing, I cannot find the transmission dipstick. Oh yes, no distributor and coil.
You're right, there is no traditional distributor and coil; the distributor is electronic, and there is one coil pack for each cylinder. You shouldn't need to replace these since it's no longer a mechanical electrical connection. If one of the modules needs to be replaced, OBD-II will trigger a fault code.
Let me know if you get your RPM dipping problem fixed.
Thanks,
Chris
I did see the trannie oil dipstick, except did not believe they would put it so out of the way. It's almost inaccessible because directly above it are a couple of fairly rigid and thick conduits.
I went to my local Volvo dealer today and he told me that there is a silent recall on the ETM module, next Wednesday they will load new software and hopefully that will fix it. We'll see.
I will post after this is done. Thanks.

It's not silent, it's a national recall/service campaign. If the software doesn;t work they must replace the ETM FREE of chargepeti wrote:I did see the trannie oil dipstick, except did not believe they would put it so out of the way.
