Help reading VIDA O2 data (to solve an ECM 4801 code)

Post by cantabrian »

On my 2004 xc70 (175k miles), I have ECM 4801 coming up (Three-way catalytic converter efficiency, bank 1 - Faulty signal), and it's turning the check engine light on. From what I understand, there are many reasons why this may be--for one, I have a new aftermarket catalytic on the car. So, before I do something like just put a spacer on the O2 sensor, I thought I'd rule out other misperformance. From what I can tell from these VIDA readings, it looks like the catalytic is mostly doing what it's supposed to. Can anyone confirm this for me? Or tell me what looks off? I've included a few screenshots, including graphic displays of the O2 readings. The 2 screenshots of the graphic displays are from before and after the catalytic is hot. The one with the .45 rear reading is from when it's warming up; the .71 reading when warm.

Could the problem simply be that since this cheap catalytic doesn't work well till the car is hot, it's throwing the codes? Or is it just not working well in general? Should I just put a spacer on the sensor?

(This may or may not be related, but the car also has an inactive (yellow) ECM 130A code in VIDA. It's for "Air leakage intake")

One way to check how well a catalytic converter is functioning is to take it's temperature at the inlet vs the outlet:

Did you ever get this problem resolved? I have the same issue and am going to try a spacer tomorrow.

Update: adding the spacer I had would leave no clearance for O2 sensor wiring which would be jammed against heat shield so I abandoned that idea.
