2006 V8 Misfiring

Suddenly got bad shaking idle and rough slow acceleration.

Got the codes read: Misfire on cylinder #3 (a couple months ago I had a CEL for something to do with an oxygen sensor in the fuel tank but it went away-- no idea if it might be related).

I swapped out the plug and coil on that cylinder. No change, still misfiring. That was where my knowledge ended so I took it to a "Volvo guy" recommended by a friend.

He says it's probably something with the fuel injector. Wants to replace it. Wants to charge me $740 .

1. Is this a reasonable next step?

2. Is this a repair I can do myself, if I order the part?

3. If not, is $740 for this work a good price? Very tough to pay that right before Christmas

I have access to ALLDATA and it shows the part as $284 and 4.6 hours labor.

I have done this repair on 850's but looks like a bit more of a pain on the XC. Most XC repairs seem to require removing more parts... then the older cars.

If doing it yourself you could swap the locations of 2 fuel injectors as a test (or get one from a pick n pull junk yard) before purchasing part. SInce it is a 4.6 hour job it is probably not for the faint of heart.

They rate the job Skill Level B -

Skill Level - Indicates the skill required to perform the labor operation. Skill Levels are A, B, or C.

Skill Level A - Requires a highly skilled person wherever precision measuring tools are needed; such as a micrometer or dial indicator. This person should be able to perform skill levels A, B, and C.
Skill Level B - Requires a person with limited skills where simpler measuring tools are needed; such as a pressure gauge or dwell-tachometer. This person should be able to perform skill levels B and C.
Skill Level C - Requires a person with basic knowledge such as replacing parts where an adjustment is generally not needed; lubrication, shocks, etc.

Some reman injectors are also available on the big auction site, and there's some info in the thread about other sources. Whole 'nother issue about what else can be replaced while your there (brittle PCV hose, worn out PCV, fuel pressure sensor (preventative). Hoping new gaskets are used, but that'll set you back a hundred or so. And with '06 mileage, the aux belt already been replaced?

Be interesting to hear back once the job is done about the actual price.

Big thank you for the replies.

Called the Volvo dealer and they quoted a lower prices for the fuel injector replacement so I took it to them and asked for a diagnostic too.

Turns out... it wasn't the fuel injector at all! It actually was a bad coil on cylinder #3... I had some FALSE info from a friend on the cylinder numbering on this engine and I apparently swapped out the wrong coil in my test. Egg on my face. Oh well, lesson learned. Always check for yourself.

Dealer wanted $400 to replace the coil so I opted to just pay for the diagnostic and buy and replace the coil myself now that I have some certainty on what the problem is. Well worth the $125 for diagnosis, though.

Just to be clear, hopefully someone can confirm for me that the cylinders are numbered like this:

Quick update-- got confirmation on the *correct* cylinder numbering as per above. Replaced the actual bad cylinder. Runs like a dream. Problem solved! Thanks.

Matt thanks for posting the info on how it worked out and especially the firing order!.. I made the same mistake on my C70 a while ago with its straight 5 cyl. I counted starting from driver side which was actually the rear of car and #5. Looks like driver-side is rear of engine for the V8 too (7&8).

Hi Matt, this is useful info, thanks for posting. To recap, your original info was "Misfire on #3". Is that the coil that you ended up finally replacing to fix the issue? Sounds like it was, but wanted to confirm. Thanks!

That is correct. The coil in #3 was bad, causing the misfire. Replaced it and no more misfire.

I had an issue with mine (2006 V8) misfiring today. CEL flashing and "slow down or upshift" message.
Tracked it down to the #6 cylinder and assumed it was a coil.
I didn't have the ability to get codes so I went at it by disconnecting packs 'till one didn't make a difference in how it ran.
$100 later and a new coil didn't fix it. I called my mechanic for some advise and by a software subscription he had suggested a ground issue.
Turns out it was the ground wire that connects the coil plug to the cylinder head. Apparently it is rather common for them to fail.
I write this because in doing my research I didn't see much discussion of the wiring and wanted to possibly save someone a bit of headache
