V50 Fog lights

Post by kranz »

I've managed to get my hands on a pair of VOLVO fog lights along with the dash panel switch to upgrade my '06 V50. Will these be plug and play or will I have to fiddle with the software to get them "enabled" ?

Thanks!

I'm afraid that they've rigged these cars so they have to have software- terrible of Ford who owned Volvo during that time period to go that direction. Even on my wife's '04 V70 I had to get a software download when I installed fogs and then again when I put in electric folding side mirrors, although I had all the electricals and switches, etc. correctly plugged up.

Thanks! I feared that might be the case. Shame on them!

Are there options for aftermarket software to enable owners to do the software integration/handshaking ourselves?

I don't think so...some of the car is CAN Bus but some of it is a newer system that has fiber optics. I'm not sure how to integrate. If you use aftermarket stuff, it would probably have to be stand-alone installation which is very much possible. You have to run a switch to near the dash and take voltage from the battery or under the dash with a spade fuse and appropriate Amp location.

If we had something aftermarket to address these volvo's and there modules, it would open them up a lot. For the GM, FCA, Ford, Merc, SAAB I have software that can do a lot of changing (within reason) and I can say I've only applied maybe 50% of its capabilities thus far. Just as anyone would suspect, it can do more harm then good if ya are not careful. It's a try at owns risk and ymmv situation.

Yes, very true and even knowing Volvo mechanics at the dealer are not apt to share this information. Taking them donuts and coffee sometimes can help if you get to know one though! LOL

A second option to have the fogs work is isolating them on a segregated circuit that is fed off a KO power source.

If the volvo shops around didnt mostly all move outta town, it probably would be a great tactic. Hate to say it, but if the current searches dont yield desired results, my wagon might be the last volvo I own from the lack of local volvo parts and volvo folks.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but is it possible to wire extra lights independently of the factory system without hurting anything? I've got sets of Bosch, Cibie and KC lights that have come off my various past vehicles and I've always made a wiring harness keyed to either the high or low beam power wire to enable a relay for power from the battery. I'll probably be using LED lights this time, which is new to me and I don't want to fry anything expensive.
