(98 v70 t5) ticking outside of engine block

(98 v70 t5) ticking outside of engine block

Hello again,

I was inspecting my car after I started it

I found the source of a light ticking noise coming from this little cylindrical item (attached picture: its the item that has 'volvo' written on it)

Of course when I tried to research ticking noises for my model, I was almost always directed to the discussions about ticking lifters. - the ticking is NOT coming from my head

This item is to the left of the battery and is attached to the radiator housing with a vacuum hose going out the bottom (I think it goes to my turbo- im not sure)

What is this so I can replace it?

If you think it's the vacuum can that's visible in your picture, it appears to have a part number on it. Maybe clean it off a little more and get the whole number, then call a Volvo dealer and ask the parts guy what it is and if they have a replacement.

Just a guess: If it's ticking, there might be a vacuum operated switch inside the can that's closing but not holding the vacuum, so it's closing and opening rapidly. Depending on the dealership, sometimes they'll actually let you ask a technician, worth a try.

Also, if that is a vacuum part, you might want to check the rubber connectors. If they're worn, that might cause a loss of vacuum and the failure to hold a vacuum.

Great suggestion, I won't be able to make it out to the dealer for a few days but ill give it a try. Im 99.9% sure that that's the problem (I touched it with a flathead and could feel the ticking coming from it.)

I think* I've figured out what this part is.

Apparently its the Vapor Canister Filter (attached)

Which brings up another question, how or what is responsible for the ticking?

Lastly, if im going to replace this filter, is there anything else should I replace at the same time?

That filter may have a check valve in it and if the valve failed it would likely explain the noise.

The fuel injectors on the white block engines are insanely loud as well.

Chances are it's the purge valve just inches away from that filter. You can unplug the wire to it to see if it stops. If you don't have a CEL or code for it, leave it alone. When they go through their testing cycle with the car (by Volvo design) they do cycle and click a lot. If / when it passes the test, it will stop.

Also a +1 to Lee: White block injectors ARE insanely LOUD!
