Ignition problems - keyfob, start button

Post by Edward Gibbs »

Seriously, am I in big trouble? For several months the key that you push into the key slot would grumble and grind - sometimes it would hold the key in and sometimes it would spit it out. I had to resort to holding the key in while simultaneously pushing the start button. I used the car earlier today by using this procedure. Later in the day I went to move the car and put the key in - this time it took the key but the car wouldn't start and it would not release the key. The error message I received was to put the shifter in park in order to remove the key or start the car. It was already in park. My immediate question is there anything I can do to get the car to start and put it in drive. The bigger question is does the entire dashboard have to be taken apart in order to replace faulty ignition parts? Does anybody have a ballpark idea as to what this would cost? And the last question is could this possibly be a DIY project? My e-mail is [email protected]. Thank you.

I recently had a similar issue with my XC70. A mechanic suggested that a dying battery might be the culprit. So, I put in a new battery and the key fob problem went away.
