1999 C70 CONV VIDA diagnosis (renamed)

Post by redc70 »

Hello, I need some help from smarter guys than me, which isn't too difficult. Have a 99 c70 convertible with the usual top problems. Back window stopping in the upright position etc. My main question is, will vida dice be able to diagnose which sensor or motor is bad? I do most of the work myself but have not really started with this Volvo. My experience is with Mercedes 300e and 560 sec. Of course the Volvo is far more advanced tech wise, is Vida Dice the way to go? Have many more questions but the top is the first place to start. Just stopped working in the fall after a whole summer of topless driving. Please let me know what you think and I shall charge on in the repairs!

Mod note - changed title for search

I have never worked on a C series car but VIDA/DICE can pretty much tell you everything about the car and run appropriate diagnostics to nail the problem. It is, of course, a one trick pony since it will only work on a 99+ Volvo and it has no utility on anything else you might have in the driveway.

Thanks Lee, Yeah I knew well enough it wouldn't work on my other cars, just needed a confirmation it would at least talk to the all the systems. I don't mind spending the money on the program as long as it works. Should be here Tuesday or Wednesday.
Once again many thanks---rob

My understanding is different than Lee. There is a separate scan / calibration tool (only avail at dealer) no China knockoff used just for the top.

I tried vida dice and could not do top. My 01 was out of calibration. Dealer charged me like $150 to re-calibrate. It was perhaps one of my luckest days ever :). I figured the dealer would tag me good like $1K. Got lucky. Tops is a dealer only issue to the best of my knowledge. If you are able to get VIDA / DICE to talk with you top please post details. Thanks

Thanks for the response cuhfs, I'll try the software and if no-go then oh well. If the dealer can re-calibrate if thats all it is then not to bad there either. Just not willing to spend $$$ on the top. Body is in great shape, interior is falling apart in pieces so not really worth the effort to spend loads of cash. This was my first Volvo and likely my last, Not happy at all with the build quality. From any distance the car looks and sounds new, but silly things like door panels coming off sun visors etc...So if the top doesn't work for a reasonable amount I'll be selling a beautiful red c70 cheap

An update: Currently running Vida Dice 2014a from a Linux box using VMware running Windows 7 Pro 32 bit and IE 11. No problems other than finding win7 pro. I can confirm that Vida Dice does diagnose convertible top issues. I currently have 8 faults dealing with faulty signals etc. Cabs 120-121, 130, 215 through 217 as well as 319 and 320. I, in error ran the battery down so next time will make sure it is on a charger. Not sure if I will be able to calibrate anything, nor do I understand what all these mean...yet. But I am at least getting closer!

Thanks for the info. Sorry for the potentially wrong info abt VIDA but I was unable to figure it out on mine... and then the dealer said it was a different scanner for the top. Please keep us informed of progress. Thanks.

I am surprised that you got VIDA to talk to the top module. I assume you used a DiCE of some sort as the link?
