850 front anti roll bar question

Post by Covert »

My bushes are knackered on my front anti roll bar , done well at 20 years old and 200k.
Question is i know they do different sizes of anti roll bar but would a 20mm bar fit in the place of a 21mm/22mm bar
No idea what size bar i have but i found a 20mm new old stock bar local to me for pennies
As always any help appreciated .

You'll need the 20mm bushings.

Stock bar should come with the bushings on them. It'll be a pain to change out the bar/bushings as you'll have to drop the subframe to get yourself enough space.

Over in North America they call it an anti-sway bar. If I recall they came in 20, 21 and 21.5mm (the largest is on the XC). The mounting holes are in the same place. Just make sure the bushes are still vulcanised onto the bar or they start clunking really quickly.

Clunking away could be the end links so make sure they are good to begin with. I've changed out the bushings on mine (IPD) once when that wasn't the issue at all.... Just saying. It seems that the original sway bars had the rubber pieces pretty much "welded" on and to get them off you had to take the bar out and burn them off... so if you can replace the whole bar the better- it would at least be easier and would be a good time for an upgrade. You'll have to slightly drop the subframe to do all of this if memory serves me well.
