Engine code

Post by Cincyken »

My 1995 T5-R check engine light came on so i had it read at Advanced Auto, they said it was "bank 1 rich". I cannot figure out what that means.
Also, for some reason my service light on the dashboard came on and is flashing. It comes on when it is due for service, but has never flashed before. What does that mean?

You should always get the 'P code' not the description. since the descriptions are often wrong.

You want the data in format P1234, P followed by four numbers.

If this is right, its usually means you are getting excess fuel somehow - perhaps a faulty Fuel pressure regulator, but there are many causes to explore.

Bank 1 rich can be anything(from vacuum leak to o2 sensor). You must demand particular code in P format or Volvo code from Advanced Auto...OR...since it's '95,you have diagnostic ports under the hood.Read the codes yourself and post 'em here.

About service light flashing....i think that your instrument cluster is going bad....and you can also read the codes yourself.

I appreciate the info. I followed the written procedure and got one code.
2-3-2- Long term fuel trim at limits at idle.
Ok, but now that i know that, where do i start?

So you're running rich... check for vacuum leaks at the easy-to-see hoses. Check the TCV hoses and purge valve hoses for cracking or obvious tears. Also check out the corrugated part of the intake hose to the turbo... it's possible that it is torn.

Would not a vacuum leak result in too lean a mixture. Why would a vacuum leak result in a rich mixture? I have never seen a 2-3-2 code before on any Volvo i have owned over the years.

Ecu enriches the mixture to compensate.

Does the 1995R use the vacuum operated fuel pressure regulator? Thats a common failure point to check.

Unless you have had very bad luck there are dozens of codes you've never seen pop up on any of your Volvos.
