98 v70 XC Clunk During Start and Stop + Grinding Noise

Post by jcurle »

I hear a clunk on startup and stop it sounds like it is below the drivers/passenger seats. Also there is a grinding noise when turning and at higher speed (>60 km/hr). From reading I suspect front drive shaft cv joint. Can anyone suggest something else or something more I can do to help diagnose this?

Have somebody steer the car while you are outside. Listen to all four wheels.
Once I had a loose emergency brake shoe lining and it made all kind of weird noises.
It may be different setup on a XC than on a FWD.

Check the prop-shaft carrier bearing in the middle of the prop-shaft as it is where you mention. The rubber doughnut it sits in fails with age. Also check the front bearing by the angle gear output. Heat from the cat helps it fail. At the back check the bush on the VC unit has not failed as it clunks when power is applied when it fails. Also check the nose bearing on the VC unit.

From your description is does not sound like parking brake shoes but it is possible.

Does it make sense to just take the driveshaft out and see if the problem continues? Thud on startup and stop is intermittent but persistent and turning tight circles causes clicking noises. I climbed under and didn't notice anything that jumped out as failed but I need to do a better check not in the driveway. Also I will assume it would be a bad idea to drive it in its current state?

I wouldn't drive it far as it may be something that is repairable now but driving on it may make it beyond salvage.

I would pull the prop-shaft for sure and see if the issue goes away. If it does it does not mean it is the prop-shaft but likely something from there back. The clicking is a bearing failing most likely.

There are 16 bolts to pull, 12 x 6mm internal hex bolts (6 each end of the prop-shaft) and 4 carrier support bolts if I recall correctly. The 98 is a little easier to remove as the later models have cupped flanges which are harder to release the shaft ends from.

My 99 V70 XC AWD did the same thing when the carrier bearing was bad on the prop shaft.

😀

I posted my reply to the water pump need in the wrong thread. I blame Matt.

Thread creeper, indeed.
