Hi, I recently got my 1999 S70 AWD back in my hands and have A TON of questions about her. She is only at 126k miles and is still mostly stock, but I want to start DIY with some things. I am unsure if all of these problems have happened in lieu of the year and a half she spent in storage or not, but a lot of things seem more or less “shaky” with her now that she is out on the road again.
I never got a chance to look at her before she got put in storage. I had hit a hummer in 2015, technically totaling the Volvo (a bent frame the insurance agent missed) and I was unable to pay the deductible for it. So she was lying in tandem in an auto-body lot in PA for a while, and eventually was put in storage. I don’t know how long she was exposed to the elements for, although I assume not for very long.
Just late last year I poured a bucket load of cash into her to get her running again. My mechanic fixed her up for me, and within her first day back and running I took her to FL…Probably not the smartest decision…
First, the more important things. This is a newer issue I noticed on the trip. I think my CV joint is bad. I thought it was the axel at first, because of how it only made a horrible clunking type of noise when you turned hard on the right, but now it makes a noise I can only describe as ‘uncatching’ when it’s held at second gear. I want to know if this is actually the CV joint. Reading up on the Worn CV joint- what are the symptoms viewtopic.php?t=37420 really helped, but the resistance when it is held at second gear has me worried it could be something else.
Now, the center console lights don’t work for the gear shifter, but neither do the AV outlets. That was an issue pre-trip, for at least a few years. I replaced the fuse for it, also replacing the bulb, crossing my fingers that it would work. It didn’t even flicker. I think that that is some kind of wiring issue, maybe from the numerous amounts of times I spilt coffee around the console…
My other issue is with the speakers. I read up on the replacing of them on here, I can’t find the exact link. But it was definitely very helpful. That post was on my phone and I wasn’t able to get into as much detail as I would have liked. So the rear deck speakers don’t work too well. When I pulled it apart to replace the passenger side, which blew earlier on in the week, the opposing one had a mouse nest around it. (thank goodness the creature didn’t get into any of the other wiring) After pulling that nest out and the speaker itself, the speaker was weak and collapsed on itself. I threw it out, and in retrospect that may not have been the best idea. I drove around for a few minutes with crystal clear sound, after replacing them from a u pull it with 2000 stock, but then suddenly when I turned right the rear deck drivers side began crackling. I don’t know if it is better off for me to just invest in new speakers, or save the money and put them into other things.
Next off is the outstanding rust on the caliper boots. I want to remove them and scrape them, but not damage them. Any suggestions?
Thanks for all the help in advance,
Kodi
